TOPIC:
*Statistical Tolerance Intervals *
There are at least three statistical quality control methods used to assess a process's performance relative to specification limits: 1) process capability, 2) variables sampling plans, and 3) statistical tolerance intervals. The statistical tolerance interval is perhaps the least well known of the three; however, it is one of the easiest methods to apply and more versatile than the others. At this month's ASQ meeting Paul Mathews will present statistical tolerance interval analysis methods for variables and attribute data and demonstrate how these methods are used in design engineering and in manufacturing engineering applications.

5:30 pm – 6:15 pm: Outliers; Part 1 by Paul Mathews 6:15 – 6:30 pm: Dinner 6:30 pm – 7: 15 pm Outliers; Part 2 by Paul Mathews
Nothing ruins a beautiful data set as fast as an ugly outlier. We've all seen them. We've all got them. What to do? What to do?
At this month's meeting we'll discuss outliers: where they come from, how to spot them, what to do with them, and what not to do with them. Here's an outlier story with an unexpected ending to get you primed for the discussion: Years ago I attended a seminar taught by the chemical engineer Fred Wood who was coauthor of the famous Lin Wood statistical modeling program. Fred told a story about consulting at a petroleum refinery where he discovered an outlier. On Christmas Eve someone recorded a high octane reading from a low octane process that was incapable of producing high octane fuel. Everyone wrote off the observation as a bad measurement caused by too much holiday egg nog. But not Fred. Upon investigation it turned out that someone had indeed screwed up. The process had been accidentally tweaked by an operator, the process reacted to the tweak, and the high-octane reading was real! Fred got the associated patent on the process to produce high octane fuel from a low octane process - because he knew and practiced the correct way to manage outliers.

Assessing the Health of your SPC System and Alternatives to SPC :
Presented by Paul Mathews of Mathews, Malnar & Bailey.
The go-to method for putting a process under control (such as in the Control phase of a Six Sigma DMAIC project) used by most organizations is statistical process control (SPC); however, how do you know if your SPC processes are healthy and what alternatives are there when SPC isn't appropriate? At this month's meeting we'll discuss the use of an SPC Audit Checklist to measure the health and effectiveness of your SPC processes and then we'll discuss alternatives to SPC including: short-run SPC, process pre-control, process and product audits, checklists, and other methods.
Paul Mathews describes himself as a physicist by education, an engineer by experience, and a statistician out of necessity. - The 7 Main Principles of Beyond Continuous Improvement; Part 2 By Robert Skillman
The 7 Main Principles of Beyond Continuous Improvement (abstract) The most important business of any business is to stay in business. Yesterday’s model of “Continuous Improvement” is inadequate in today’s business world. Continuous Improvement is evolutionary by its very nature. Although this is necessary and foundational, the evolution must be disrupted with revolutionary leaps in business and process innovation. The most one can expect from Continuous Improvement is just to keep up, you don’t get ahead by keeping up you get ahead by leapfrogging the competition.

Free Software: Many of us have reluctantly become the computer and software technical support services for our families and extended families. For example, without spending any money, we often have to find software to meet a specific need or a way to extend the life of a worn out computer. Luckily, there are many free software solutions available. Paul Mathews will describe some of the free software that he has found to be useful including software from the following categories: operating systems, password managers, office packages, PDF creators, statistics, mind mapping, CAD, graphics editing, and programming IDEs.

The Next Frontier in Safe Patient Care – Developing a Safe and Reliable Medical Device
The health care industry is one of the fastest growing segments of US economy. Health care spending is increasing all over the world due to increased life expectancy and consequently the increased aging population.
However all the money is not being spent to treat only first time patients. A fairly substantial amount is being spent to correct mistakes that are made by hospitals, doctors and caregivers and to re-treat patients for infections that they caught during their stay in the hospital. The mistakes range from human error to errors in medical records to medical device failures to adverse drug reactions due to incorrect combination of drugs and dosages being dispensed to patients.
So what will ensure safe and affordable patient care in the coming years? A holistic Systems Approach to patient care (both in hospital and home environment) and safe and reliable medical devices will help achieve better patient safety and quality of care. And using principles of human factors engineering and a robust product development process with an emphasis on reliability engineering will help achieve safe and reliable medical devices.
This presentation will cover a typical new product development cycle in the medical device industry, give an overview of a robust reliability engineering program and introduce concepts of human factors engineering. All the material covered in the presentation can be applied to non-medical industries too.
